Montalegre belongs to Trás-os-Montes and has about 1800 inhabitants according to 2011 statistics. This village is the municipality of Riano with an approximate area of 805.46 km2 and 10 537 inhabitants. To the north of the municipality we find Spanish villages like Lobios, Muiños, Calvos de Randín, Baltar, Cualedro and Oímbra, to the east is Chaves and to the south east Boticas being to the south we find Cabeceiras de Basto, southwest Vieira do Minho and west Terras de Bouro . The municipalities of Montalegre and Boticas form the region of Barroso.
Montalegre is the ideal place to enjoy nature and to experience some epic events that take place there.

The Montalegre International Circuit has hosted major sporting events, several Rallycross competitions, namely the 2018 World Championship with full benches.
There are several trails for lovers of walking, races on rails full of magnificent landscapes and fantastic sensations for those who enjoy direct contact with nature (well-known trails: contraband route, D Nuno trail, River Trail, Ourigo Trail). The municipality of Montalegre comprises 26% of the area of the National Park of Peneda Gerês that provides a very important natural and historical heritage, from the fragas, gorges and precipices to the churches, chapels and granaries.
In Montalegre we can enjoy several reservoirs (Pisões, Venda Nova, Sezelhe and Paradela), excellent for water sports or simply to enjoy a meal next to these water mirrors that mark so deeply the landscapes of the villages that incorporate them.
In gastronomic terms Montalegre is very well-known for the stew, for the posta barrosã and the goat, not forgetting traditional products with rye bread, smoked, potato, chestnut and honey.
The castle of Montalegre, classified as a national monument, is also an emblematic site. In the heart of Montalegre the Castle proudly displays the keep, built by D Afonso III at the end of the 13th century strategically to defend the frontier.
An event that in recent years welcomes thousands of people in Montalegre is Friday the 13th or Halloween, with several quality spectacles on stage and other street animations that bring the euphoria and frenzy to Montalegre.
In the village of Montalegre we were able to visit the ecomuseum, a space to spread the territory and culture of the region.
The Serra do Larouco, the second highest mountain in mainland Portugal, is located in part in the municipality of Montalegre. The top of the mountain is the best viewpoint of the county where we can see the barrages of the bulls and the whole of Montalegre. Due to the altitude of the county, Montalegre becomes very attractive by the snow, in the first snow of the year the village and the mountains are filled with enthusiastic visitors with the idea to play and enjoy the snow. It is in this range that world and European paragliding championships take place.
In terms of basic services they are assured by several organizations that I will mention: at the supermarket level we have Intermarché and Minipreço as well as Nova Era and Cruz e Cruz, a Kina stationery, several bakeries and pastries, Dr Bento Secondary School a health center, several senior homes, a trucking center, several restaurants and hotels.
